Shed and Garage Security

Hi Everyone

Following several incidents in SE of Edinburgh could I please ask you to make sure your sheds and garages are secure, especially if you use them to store bikes / motorbikes.

I’ve also attached our Cycle Security and Motorbike Security Leaflets for further information.

When securing a shed or garage the key points are:

  • Use a closed shackled padlock to secure doors
  • Fit coach bolts or anti tamper screws on shed hinges and to secure any padlock and hasp – these prevent thieves from easily and quickly removing screws
  • Install a stand-alone shed alarm
  • Secure bikes within sheds to a ground anchor or immovable object
  • Review the lighting and fencing around your property
  • Consider a garage defender
  • If you have a house alarm consider linking your garage into the system
  • If you are purchasing any security products Police Scotland would always recommend that they are endorsed by Secured by Design – www.securedbydesign.com, Sold Secure – www.soldsecure.com or Thatcham – www.thatcham.org

    For further information please contact:

    Or see

If you see anyone acting suspiciously near to your property or vehicle please contact the police immediately with as detailed a description as possible of any person or vehicle involved.

Please call 999 if an emergency and urgent police assistance is required or 101 to report the matter to the police.

    Kind Regards
    PC Campbell
