Armed Policing in Scotland: What We Do Armed Policing Operations is based in Dundee and Perth. We respond to Firearms Incidents including threats from weapons at the direction of the Initial Tactical Firearms Commander (ITFC) based at C3 in Dundee. We regularly have to cover Aberdeen and Inverness so the ITFC has to take this into consideration when allowing us to assist at Divisional incidents. We also help with resourcing East Command, which is Edinburgh, Fife and Forth Valley areas and will have officers seconded to Royalty and VIP Planning Operations, such as Royal Court at Balmoral. Our vehicles have method of entry and advanced first Aid Equipment. At the moment, we only have access to the Enforcer and Hooligan bar as well as bolt cutters. In the near future, we hope to have access to hydraulics and cutting equipment. Each vehicle has a First Aid bag with a De-fib and Bag, Mask and Valve. All officers are now trained in maintaining airways with some specialist officers having completed Advanced training which includes the use of oxygen. Some of our officers are trained in close protection or tactical rifle/working at heights. Both have significant training abstractions and Close Protection Officers are regularly deployed in this specialism. In missing person incidents, our vehicles carry night vision and thermal imaging cameras. Thermal imaging is good for searching open areas and buildings. Night Vision has limitations when it is used outdoors but is good in buildings. During incidents we will be supported by, or we will support, officers from the CTSFU based at Glasgow or Edinburgh. If requested to assist ARV’s will seek authorisation from the ITFC who will consider the impact on responding to Firearms Incidents in the North of Scotland.
